Every creator eventually asks the same question: should this be free, or should I charge for it? The honest answer is that you need both, and most people get the balance wrong in one of two directions.

Some creators give everything away for free and wonder why nobody ever buys anything. Others try to charge for their very first piece of content before anyone has a reason to trust them yet. Neither approach builds a real, sustainable digital product creation business. The two need to work together, doing different jobs.

What Free Products Are Actually For

A free product has exactly one purpose: proving you know what you’re talking about, before you ask anyone for money. It’s not charity, and it’s not a lesser version of your “real” product. It’s the first real interaction someone has with your work.

This is exactly why the OOTP Guide To Digital Branding is free. It’s not a stripped-down teaser. It’s a genuinely complete, usable resource on its own. Someone can download it, get real value, and walk away better off, even if they never buy anything else from me. That’s what makes the free product convincing enough to make people curious about what the paid version of working with me actually looks like.

If your free product feels incomplete on purpose, people notice. That’s the fastest way to lose the trust you were trying to build in the first place.

What Paid Products Are Actually For

Paid products exist to convert that trust into income, and to give people something more direct, more hands-on, or more complete than what the free resource offers. This is where 7FDCOF and direct coaching come in. The free coaching report tells you honestly how affiliate marketing and digital product creation actually work. Joining 7FDCOF is where you get the ongoing community, accountability, and tools to actually execute on it.

Paid doesn’t mean “the free version but longer.” It means solving a bigger, more specific version of the problem, one that genuinely requires more support, structure, or access than a single free download can provide.

The Real Mistake Most Creators Make

The mistake isn’t choosing free or paid. It’s not being clear about which one you’re offering, and why. If your paid product doesn’t offer something meaningfully different from your free one, people will feel like they’re being asked to pay twice for the same thing. That kills trust faster than almost anything else.

Before you decide whether something should be free or paid, ask yourself one honest question: what does someone get by paying that they genuinely could not get for free? If you don’t have a clear answer, that’s the actual problem to solve first, not the price tag.

How This Plays Out In Practice

Here’s the simple version of the system behind everything on this site:

  • Free: the OOTP Guide To Digital Branding, and Mr President’s Coaching Report, real, complete resources that build trust
  • Paid:<\/strong> 7FDCOF membership and the BlacTech Africa Cohort, deeper, ongoing support for people ready to go further

Neither layer works well without the other. The free content earns the right to ask for anything at all. The paid layer is where the actual transformation happens.

If you’re building your own digital products and you’re stuck on where to draw that line, start with the free layer first. Give away something genuinely useful, then build the paid offer around whatever people ask for next.
